War in Ethiopia

Humanitarian catastrophe in Ethiopia

The association Etiopia-Witten addresses the international community because of the humanitarian disaster in the Ethiopian northern province of Tigray

For more than 10 years, the development aid association Etiopia-Witten e. V. has been supporting people in Ethiopia, one of the poorest countries in the world, with a focus on the now embattled northern province of Tigray, in building up their health and school systems. Great progress has been made possible through close cooperation on the site with the strongly committed doctors, technicians, administrators and teachers (for more information, see: "https://etiopia-witten.de/").

Because of the great poverty that remained unchanged in many areas, the increasing drought, invading swarms of locusts and the newly added Covid-19 pandemic, the population was already in great need.

The currently ongoing military conflict in Tigray is now leading to catastrophic human tragedy. The blockage of electricity in Tigray, the blocking of access roads for the supply of food and fuel, the disconnection of telephone connections and the Internet, the closure of banks and a steadily increasing number of injured and dead soldiers and civilians are leading to a breakdown of the food supply, the supply of drinking water and the entire medical infrastructure.

In the face of this humanitarian disaster, we call on the international community to immediately enforce these measures to resolve it.

  • End of the war activities in Tigray.
  • Access by aid organizations to people in need
  • Establishment of an air bridge for the immediate supply of basic provisions and medical material
  • Access for foreign medical facilities to care for injured persons of any kind
  • Restoration of the electricity grid
  • Reopening of the banks
  • Restoration of telephone and Internet connection.

We call upon all those who are involved in the strongly ethnically influenced conflicts in Ethiopia:

Don’t fight! – Compromise!
